My J skills and I
Journalism Skills (Blog Entry no.2 )
Journalism is very significant in our society. What journalism does, is it keeps democracy alive in our country since it is the source of vital information that gives awareness to us citizens on what is happening around us lately. I remember my first participation in an event regarding journalism way back in grade school; l was chosen to participate in multiple interschool competitions and was assigned in news writing. That experience actually gave me a different perspective regarding the essence of journalism. I may not be the best in writing, but at least I learned how storytelling through writing can motivate change. But since then, I have not written any news articles until I enrolled in the Communication program.
It has been a year since I entered Communication. Still, whenever we tackled journalism, the remnants of my experiences go back to me and revive my knowledge regarding journalism principles and elements. I believe from my 1-year experience in Communication, I can consider myself well-taught regarding fact-checking and data-gathering. Our professors always remind us that we should always analyze our sources and gather information from credible references and preferably primary sources since it gives more accurate information.
Lately, I have spent most of my time studying cinematography, illustration, and 3D modeling because I want to explore those things to pursue film. But I overlooked another essential part of a film: writing, which is also necessary for journalism. Looking at my current J skills(journalism skills), my works’ clarity and concreteness need improvement. In terms of writing articles, I have the knowledge regarding journalistic writing by the book but lacks practice because I only write when required school works.
All in all, I am considering developing my writing skills to tell more impactful stories. I still believe that everyone can write like a journalist. We just need to bring the truth interestingly and practice writing. Then, the truth can prevail, and progress can be reached.
